Me olemme Pauliina ja Maria, kaksi sosiaalialan ammattilaista, joiden intohimoina ovat matkailu sekä globaalit ihmisoikeuskysymykset. Erityisenä kiinnostuksen kohteenamme on jo pidemmän aikaa ollut seksiperäinen ihmiskauppa ja siihen kytkeytyvät ilmiöt.

"The Red Umbrella Project" on saanut alkunsa puolivahingossa suunnitellessamme ensimmäistä yhteistä matkaamme Makedonian pääkaupunkiin Skopjeen vuoden 2018 alussa. Tavoitteenamme oli yhdistää matkaan syvempää ymmärrystä maan tilanteesta ihmisoikeuksien toteutumisen näkökulmasta. Päädyimme tuolloin vierailemaan  Open Gate -järjestön toimipisteessä, jossa pääsimme tapaamaan paikallisia työntekijöitä ja kuulemaan muun muassa romanien, turvapaikanhakijoiden sekä ihmiskaupan uhrien asemasta Makedoniassa. Tästä matkasta inspiroituneena kävimme vuoden 2018 aikana myös Romanian, Serbian sekä Portugalin matkoillamme tutustumassa kyseisten maiden vastaaviin toimijoihin.

Tällä kertaa kirjoitamme blogia Italiasta - maasta, joka suurimmalle osalle ihmisistä edustaa muotia, hyvää ruokaa, viiniä ja upeita shoppailumahdollisuuksia. Tämä ei kuitenkaan ole koko totuus, vaan kiiltokuvamaisesta imagostaan huolimatta Italia toimii porttina Eurooppaan suuntautuvassa seksiperäisessä ihmiskaupassa, ja on myös sijainniltaan merkittävä kansainvälistä suojelua hakevien pakolaisten reitillä. Italian kaduilla seksiperäinen ihmiskauppa rehottaa ja seksipalveluiden ostaminen on miesten keskuudessa enemmänkin sääntö kuin poikkeus. Tämä blogi tarjoaa sinulle mahdollisuuden nähdä myös Italian synkkää puolta - sitä, joka on arkea tuhansille ihmisille päivittäin.

Blogia kirjoitetaan henkilökohtaisesta näkökulmasta, omien havaintojemme ja kokemustemme pohjalta, hyödyntäen paikallisten alan toimijoiden tarjoamia oppimismahdollisuuksia.

We are Pauliina and Maria, professionals in the field of social work who share a passion for travelling and global human right questions. For a while now our special interest has been human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation, which is often referred to as sex trafficking, and the phenomena connected to it. From now on we will be usinf the term sex trafficking when referring to this.

"The Red Umbrella Project" started nearly by accident while planning our first trip together to Skopje the capital of Macedonia in the beginning of 2018. Our main goal was to combine the trip with a deeper understanding of a the current human right situation in Macedonia. That time we got an opportunity to visit an organization called "Open Gate". There we met local social work professionals who told us about the situation of the Roma population, asylum seekers and the victims of human trafficking in the country. Inspired by the trip we also visited the similar kind of organizations in Romania, Serbia and Portugal during the same year.

This time we are writing our blog from Italy - a country that for most of us presents fashion, good food, wine and amazing shopping opportunities. However, this is not the whole reality as despite the glamorous image Italy acts as a Europe's gateway for sex trafficking. The country also plays an important role for thousands of people fleeing to seek international protection in Europe. Sex trafficking is extremely visible in the streets of Italy and buying sex is very common among men. This blog offers you a chance to see the dark side of Italy -the one that is an everyday life for thousands of people.

We are writing this blog from our personal point of view based on our own experiences and observations. We also utilize the great learning opportunities offered by the local professionals working in combating human trafficking in Italy.

We warmly hope that our writings offer you some new thoughts, knowledge or inspiration either you are a professional, an activist or a person interested in the topic or someone reading about this for the first time.
